Independence and Beyond: Course Description: This
one-day course will provide an active learning environment for therapists and
assistants to gain knowledge of how to design innovative treatment
interventions using appropriate
tools to evaluate the geriatric patient in an objective manor with respect to
balance, gait, strength and endurance and their functional abilities. Included
will be active participation in how to design your interventions and goals (and
updating of goals) based on objective assessment and patient feedback to effect
a positive, patient-centered and measurable change in your geriatric patients - what MDs, payers, family
members and most importantly PATIENTS are looking for! The day will conclude with practical application in
a case-study format with video clips showcasing innovative treatments. Course Objectives: After
attending this course, participants will be able to: 1.
Choose and implement
the appropriate assessment for their patient status and setting; 2.
Formulate and update
objective goals that are meaningful to your patients; 4. Course Outline:
Speaker info: Jenny Coulter, MPT, GCS, received her B.S. in Physical Therapy (1993) and her Master's (1994) in Physical Therapy from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. Ms. Coulter has been Board Certified by
the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in Geriatrics since 2005. She
has spoken locally for over 10 years and nationally since 2003. Her work
experience with older adults spans the continuum of care including acute care,
outpatient clinics, long-term care, home health and community outreach with
education presentations and screening for fall prevention. Ms. Coulter
currently is employed by Providence Health System in Portland, OR working in
the areas of home health and ElderPlace [A program of all-inclusive care (PACE)
for the elderly]. She has been involved in her community and workplace to raise
awareness of these issues and is the current APTA Geriatrics Balance and Falls
Special Interest Group Nominating Chair. Her current professional memberships
include the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the Gerontological
Society of America (GSA). |
