Continuing Education -- Strategies 4 Success

Course Description: Open to licensed professionals of all disciplines and caregivers for persons with cognitive impairment. In addition, the course is ideal for those who work in assisted living, skilled nursing or home health care settings.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be given the opportunity to take an examination to become a Certified Geriatric Wellness Center provider.

Certification will include all current materials for the GWC - including the necessary templates to develop your own GWC, as well as access to the GWC website for updates as long as they remain certified providers.

Course Objectives

Certified Geriatric Wellness Center Instructors will have the knowledge and skills to implement a successful cognitive enhancement and wellness program. These programs can be adapted to various settings, including:

Group based classes for independent community dwelling older adults (e.g., classes at a senior center)
Group based classes for older adults living in assisted living (e.g., classes as a part of the activities program)
Home health care programs that help to provide cognitive stimulation to home bound older adults
One-on-one classes organized by caregivers who want to be able to help loved ones or friends maintain or even improve memory ability.

Overview
Use it or lose it: Improving Memory Ability
Understanding dementia and memory loss
Observe actual Geriatric Wellness Center Classes (Salem classes only)
Different types of cognitive enhancement activities

Saturday 8:00am-2:00pm

Balance, attention, and dual tasking
Fall prevention
Modifying the environment
Memory and Cognition: What is it and how can it be improved
Memory and the Brain: Exercise all areas of the brain
Nutrition, mood, social support, and physical exercise
Developing you own Geriatric Wellness Program
Curriculum development
Participant management: How to handle issues common in the cognitively impaired
